Police Officer

Joyce Anne Carnegie (38)

Date of Death: Thursday, April 8, 1999

Officer Carnegie was shot and killed by an armed robbery suspect she had stopped for questioning. The suspect had just committed two muggings in the area minutes before and was walking toward Officer Carnegie when she stopped him. As she approached he drew his weapon and shot her before she had time to draw her own weapon. Although she was wearing a vest, she was shot in the head and abdomen. She was found next to her patrol car by a federal agent who happened to be in the area.

The suspect pled guilty to her murder and was sentenced to life in prison on June 30, 1999.

Officer Carnegie is the first female officer to be killed in the line of duty in Essex County, New Jersey, and the second to be killed in the state. She had been with the agency for four years and is survived by her mother.

I did not personally know Officer Carnegie, but I have heard great things about the person she was to people who knew her .  Anytime someone is willing to put their life  on the line to save another in any line of duty to me that person deserves the greatest respect and honor. May God continue to bless and  keep safe your family and fellow Officers.
